40 artists featured in exhibition for prison justice opens July 6th at BOOM Concepts by transformative justice group, Let’s Get Free.

BOOM Concepts welcomes back Western PA-based group organizing around mass incarceration and gender-based violence, Let’s Get Free, to host 2nd annual exhibition and art auction for prison justice. Let's Get Free Women and Trans Prisoner Defense Committee opens Letters and Liberation on July 6th at BOOM Concepts in the Garfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA, during the July 6th Unblurred Art Crawl.

Letters and Liberation developed as a way to release hundreds of letters amassed over years of maintaining friendships with people in prison and organizing for justice in the prisons.

“I didn’t want to just throw them away. I like the idea of transforming them into art and letting that energy go.” -Etta Cetera, Co-Founder of Let’s Get Free. Cetera, who has letters dating back eighteen years, explains the importance of letters:

“Letters are an everyday part of being in prison or having a loved one incarcerated. Letters are instrumental in organizing for justice with people in prison. Letters are conduits for relationships. Letters can be the only tangible thread connecting people to their loved ones.”

Over 40 artists from both sides of the prison walls have submitted works in ceramics, textiles, silk screen, collage, stained glass, drawing and photography. 100 pieces of art will be auctioned off during the opening reception on July 6th, with the auction being live from 6 PM — 9 PM. Last year's exhibition, “Contraband” sold over 100 pieces of artwork raising $5,000. This also helped to launch Operation Break Bread connecting people in Pittsburgh with women and trans prisoners incarcerated at Cambridge Springs Prison, 2 hours north of Pittsburgh.
