Join your friends and neighbors for this after-hours, all-ages, musical get-together at the Library. Enjoy food, fun, and an opportunity to talk with the artists. Each session will focus primarily on music, but the musicians also will discuss the genre they are performing--from history to the artists most known for the brand of music.

January 12: «A Journey Through Be-Bop,» featuring works by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and many more. Subha Das and Chris Potter will perform. Bebop jazz originated in the 1940s and is characterized by complex harmony and rhythms. It is associated particularly with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, and Dizzy Gillespie.
A professional percussionist/music educator, Subha Das is a founding member of the Olga Watkins Band, a Soul/Blues/R&B quartet. Jazz pianist Chris Potter is involved with multiple musical projects in Pittsburgh and has studied with Eric Doney and Jesse Green.

February 16: “New Orleans R&B: Doctors, Professors, & Maharajahs” Pianist Tom Roberts will focus on New Orleans R&B pianists, including Doctor John, Professor Longhair, James Booker, and Harry Connick.
A leading exponent of early jazz piano, Tom Roberts has played everywhere from New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Tonight Show to the major jazz clubs in the French Quarter.

March 16: “Vintage Piano Masters: An Evening of Ragtime & Stride”
Martin Spitznagel will perform the music of Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, & more! Ragtime music--characterized by a syncopated melodic line and regularly accented accompaniment--evolved by black American musicians in the 1890s and was played especially on the piano.
Whether performing the masterworks of Scott Joplin or the score to Star Wars, Martin Spitznagel’s electric performances have left audiences across the world enthralled with America’s first popular music, ragtime.
