This session will introduce participants to compassion fatigue, providing a brief history and working definition of the term. Related concepts, such as compassion satisfaction, resilience, secondary traumatic stress, burnout, vicarious trauma, stress, and posttraumatic stress disorder will be discussed briefly. Signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue will be explored, as well as the negative impact on professional functioning. Several assessments, including an assessment for measuring life stress and the ProQOL 5 Self-Score instrument (Stamm, 2012), will be provided for participants to assess their own levels of compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, and burnout. Participants will be encouraged to formulate a comprehensive selfcare
plan covering six areas of concern for mental health professionals.

Objectives
1. Participants will gain working definitions and personal understandings of the following:
compassion fatigue; resilience; compassion satisfaction.
2. Participants will be able to identify a minimum of two signs/symptoms of compassion
fatigue.
3. Participants will be able to identify a minimum of two factors that may increase their risk
of compassion fatigue.
4. Participants will formulate a comprehensive self care plan covering six areas of concern
for mental health professionals.
5. Participants will experience how expressive arts and mindfulness practices help to
alleviate the impact of secondary traumatic stress.

About the Presenters:
Denise Houser, MA, LPC, NCC is a licensed professional counselor and trauma therapist who has extensive experience providing counseling to at-risk youth and their families using the Eco-Systemic Structural Family Therapy model. Denise is trained in EMDR and TF-CBT. She is a member of the Green Cross Academy of Traumatology and the American Counseling Association. She specializes in working with children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced trauma, as well as those experiencing family conflicts, parenting or co-parenting challenges. Denise received her B.A in Speech Communication and B.S.B.A in Business. Administration from Geneva College, her M.A. in Counseling from Geneva College, and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Regent University, where she is currently researching resilience and post-traumatic growth in families.

Paula Soto, LSW, ERYT, CCTP, CCFP, YACEP is a social worker and yoga teacher with two decades of experience empowering individuals and communities toward wellness. Noting a lack of effective services for people impacted by trauma, Paula founded Intersections Wellness in 2012 to make the physical and mental health benefits of yoga and mindfulness accessible to the community. Paula divides her time between her private psychotherapy practice, community social work, and training mental health professionals and yoga teachers.Ms. Soto specializes in the treatment of trauma/abuse, anxiety, depression, women’s issues, and adolescents. Her approach is humanistic, based on the belief that each of us has an inherent drive toward health and wholeness; and each person is worthy of compassion and acceptance. Ms. Soto offers Counseling and yoga instruction in a private office, conveniently located in downtown Beaver, Pennsylvania. She has developed wellness programs or conducted classes, workshops or trainings for many populations, including: at-risk children; survivors of domestic violence; people in substance abuse recovery; people in mental health recovery; drug and alcohol counseling professionals; and trauma counselors. Paula’s credentials include Masters in Social Work from Fordham University, BA from New York University. Ms. Soto is a Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT200), Dancing Mindfulness facilitator, and Member of International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT).

Cognitive Behavior Institute maintains responsibility for content of this program. Social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors in Pennsylvania can receive continuing education from providers approved by the American Psychological Association. Since CBI is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education, licensed social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists, and licensed professional counselors in Pennsylvania will be able to fulfill their continuing education requirements by attending CBI continuing education programs.
